Senior lawyer Harish Salve and Fali Nariman today informed Supreme Court that social media is horrible and there is an urgent need to regulate it. Taking cognizance of the concern, Supreme Court said the people spread false information about court proceedings without cross checking facts therefore it is a serious matter.
Fali Nariman submitted in the court that the abusive social media required to be regulated. Harish Salve also submitted that twitter is extremely abusive and therefore he has deleted his twitter account.
The concern comes up during thew hearing of Bulandsahar Gang rape case. Former UP minister Azam Khan created a controversy after he alleged that a ” political conspiracy” is involved in the gang rape of a minor girl and her mother on the highway in Bulandsahar on 29 July.
The Supreme Court had also asked Azam Khan to file a brief affidavit expressing unconditional apology to the Bulandshahar gang rape victims for his controversial remarks that the rape was a political conspiracy.
Meanwhile the Supreme Court today referred to a constitutional bench questions like whether a public functionary or a minister can claim freedom of speech while airing views in a sensitive matter which is under investigation.
